![]() ![]() British herbalist John Gerard wrote in 1597, “Wormewood voideth away the wormes of the guts.” This evocative connection helped solidify Artemisia absinthium’s common English name. Galen, a physician during the second century CE, suggested it for stomach relaxation and as a remedy for swooning. Throughout the centuries wormwood remained a folk medicine. Roman scholar Pliny the Elder describes chariot-race champions drinking absinthium, its taste reminding them that glory has its bitter side-a sentiment wholeheartedly embraced by later enthusiasts. Hippocrates, often considered the first physician, prescribed it for menstrual pain, jaundice, anemia, and rheumatism. Typically made by soaking wormwood leaves ( Artemisia absinthium) in wine or spirits, this ancient absinthe supposedly aided childbirth. The French name derives from the Greek absinthion, which the Greeks used not as an intoxicant but as a medicine. Yet by World War I, throughout the world a combination of economic interests, dubious science, and a fear of social change-and the tabloid stories that used murder to inflame readers’ imaginations-had turned the Green Fairy into the Green Demon.ĭavid Nathan-Maister and the Virtual Absinthe Museum, Ībsinthe was not always the devil in a bottle. While temperance movements had blossomed worldwide in the late 1800s and early 1900s, never before had an individual alcoholic drink been targeted. Pure Food Board imposed a ban, calling absinthe “one of the worst enemies of man, and if we can keep the people of the United States from becoming slaves to this demon, we will do it.” By 1915 the Green Fairy ( la fée verte, as the absintheurs called it) had been exiled even from France, long the center of absinthe subculture. Belgium had banned it in 1905 and the Netherlands in 1910. In 1910 Switzerland declared absinthe illegal. The canton of Geneva, reacting to its own “absinthe murder,” followed suit. The canton of Vaud (containing Commugny) banned it less than a month after Lanfray’s death. ![]() The murders energized prohibitionists-the drink became a Swiss national concern. Found guilty on four counts of murder-his wife, an examination revealed, had been pregnant with a son-Lanfray hanged himself in prison three days later. He had examined the defendant and declared confidently that only sustained, daily corruption by that foul drink could have given him “the ferociousness of temper and blind rages that made him shoot his wife for nothing and his two poor children, whom he loved.” The prosecution countered that his absinthe consumption was dwarfed by his prodigious intake of other alcohol. The lawyers called to the stand Albert Mahaim, a leading Swiss psychiatrist. The press seized on Lanfray’s story, dubbing it ‘the absinthe murder.’Īt his trial the following February, Lanfray’s lawyers declared him a classic case of absinthe madness-a medically ill-defined affliction, but one that captured the public imagination. La Gazette de Lausanne, a French-language Swiss newspaper, called it “the premiere cause of bloodthirsty crime in this century.” Prohibitionists could not have imagined a more potent metaphor for social decay. The press seized on Lanfray’s story, dubbing it “the absinthe murder.” For members of the anti-absinthe movement (including many newspaper editors), two glasses of pale-green liquid explained why a family lay dead. “Absinthe,” Commugny’s mayor publicly declared, “is the principal cause of a series of bloody crimes in our country.” A petition to outlaw the drink gathered 82,000 signatures in just a few days. Anti-absinthe sentiment had been bubbling throughout Europe, and in Switzerland it boiled over. Then he went into the next room, walked to the crib of his other daughter, Blanche, and shot her.įrom this domestic tragedy the people of Commugny drew one inescapable conclusion: the absinthe made him do it. When his daughter Rose came to investigate, he shot her too. He took his loaded rifle from the wall and shot her through the forehead. Back home Lanfray finished a liter of wine as his wife watched in disgust. Heading home, Lanfray stopped at a café and drank black coffee with brandy. He drank another glass before leaving work. At lunch and during his afternoon break from work at a nearby vineyard, he downed six glasses of strong wine. Lanfray had drunk his way through the previous day, beginning near dawn with a shot of absinthe diluted in water. “I loved my family and children so much!” “Please tell me I haven’t done this,” he wailed. Facing the bodies of his family, he wept, insisting he didn’t remember shooting the three. In the smallest coffin lay her two-year-old daughter, Blanche.īefore the coffins stood Jean Lanfray, a burly, French-speaking laborer. The mother’s was the largest, adult-sized a smaller casket held her four-year-old daughter, Rose. It was late August 1905 in the small village of Commugny, Switzerland, and three coffins stood open to the air.

For as much as IGI 2 is a sequel, it also at times seems little more than an upgrade. Perhaps the developers have been looking so hard at their own game that they failed to notice the competition creep up behind them. Plus, you can climb through windows and hide dead bodies - prerequisite skills that IGI's returning hero has great difficulty with. With the exception of perhaps Soldier Of Fortune II, whose stealth-based missions are a bit of a cop-out, IGI 2 just feels like it has been left behind, not least by the recent camp spy sequel No One Lives Forever 2, a game far more sophisticated when it comes to sneaking around. Since the original game, which was undoubtedly a breath of fresh air when it first arrived, many titles have furthered the concept of an action-based game where thought and careful planning are as important as firepower and itchy trigger fingers. Unlike most Jackbox Party Pack mini-games, Drawful Animate has a standard mode along with a Friend Mode that has players animating scenes about the other players in the game (which usually has the funniest results), plus Make Your Own and Featured Content modes as well. In any case, Drawful Animate otherwise provides an experience that should be familiar to Drawful fans, and it gets bonus points for having multiple game modes. Of course, this problem is negated if players are in a group that draws at the same pace, though that seems highly unlikely. Those that do manage to draw fast will find that they’re spending a great deal of time waiting around for the other players to finish their drawings. Players are given three minutes to draw both slides, and since they have to be a bit more careful with their drawings if they want the animations to look good, players will take their time more than they ever have before. The main issue is that turns tend to take longer with Drawful Animate. This opens the door for new possibilities when it comes to Drawful hilarity, but there are some drawbacks unique to Drawful Animate when compared to previous versions of the mini-game. In all cases, consult the designer for specific size and wall-thickness recommendations before moving forward. If serious aerobatics are anticipated, 0.058 or even 0.065 should be considered. A wall thickness of 0.049 inches should be suitable for lighter engines (O-235 and O-320), and a wall thickness of 0.058 inches should be better for larger engines. The most common material for fabricating an engine mount is ¾-inch 4130 chrome-moly tubing. That said, many people do use wood for their jigs, but a steel jig is preferable, even though it may seem like overkill if you are only making one mount. This makes it much easier for things to get out of alignment. Wood is easier and cheaper to make, but it has some drawbacks: It’s easy to light your wood jig on fire during the welding process, or at least badly char the locating holes. The jig can be made out of wood or steel. First, what type of mount is required? Second, how far in front of the firewall do you want to set the engine? It is fairly safe to assume that you want the engine centered laterally, but where will the engine go vertically, so it will fit into a cowl that will blend smoothly into the fuselage? And lastly, do you want to angle the engine away from the longitudinal axis?Ī welding jig is mandatory if you want the final result to be satisfactory. If your engine cases are cast and machined to accept a conical mount, there is no economical way of changing that, short of getting another engine.īefore you can begin, there are a few questions that you will need to answer. Your choice of engine dictates the choice of engine mount for you. However, if you are building from plans, you will probably need to fabricate your own mount. If you are building a kit, it is highly likely that the kit manufacturer has included, or can provide at some extra cost, a complete, pre-welded engine mount to accommodate the engine of your choice. Further, conical mounts are easier to fabricate if you want to make your own, because the mounts are straight instead of angled.Įven if you pre-weld some parts, damage to a wood jig is inevitable. A set of conical engine-mount bushings will cost about $60, but a set of Dynafocal bushings and bolts will run about $500. Conical mounts have the clear edge when it comes to cost. The Dynafocal mount fans have obviously prevailed, but conical mounts do have their admirers. Of course, many people think that this lack of movement is the greatest disadvantage of the conical mount, because by limiting it, you transmit more engine vibration to the airplane. A conical mount will only allow about half as much movement of the engine as a Dynafocal mount. In a tightly cowled engine, this reduced movement can be a real benefit. The advantage of the conical mount is that it does not permit as much movement between the engine and the rest of the airplane as a Dynafocal type. An engine that needs a conical mount has mounting holes that are tapered from both sides and are cut square with the back of the engine case. You can recognize a conical mount because the engine-mounting bolts are all parallel to each other along the longitudinal axis of the airplane, and the mount bushings are rather cone-shaped, hence the name. |
